We went to Rabbit Island, and we listened. We sat with the moss, the waves, the age old rocks, the snowshoe hares, the stars, and the mist. We lay in silence, jumped in the cold water, and we sang with the moon. We collaborated with the island.
The three of us humans would spend time in different parts of the island each day, listening deeply for the songs that wanted to come into being. We would gather back together and share these song seeds with each other, nurturing them, adding harmonies and instruments. Then, we would return the song to the place on the island where it began - our polished gem offerings to this place that gave us immeasurable gifts.
As we crafted and sang the songs, an idea formed: to create an interactive song map that would connect the songs that came through us with the places that inspired them, in a way people could experience. Each song’s origin place will be shown as a little symbol on this map, which will take you to a video of the song as it is being shared back with the place where it began. These recordings are simple and raw, filled with our voices but also with the sounds of the wind and the waves - the island singing along with us.
When endless facts detailing the crises of our era leave us overwhelmed and unmoved, perhaps it is through the ancient art of harmony singing, a language of cellular resonance, that we will find ourselves beautifully beholden to the whole -- and motivated by our undeniable connection to fiercely protect it.
