Rabbit Island Field Recordings

Andrew Ranville
2012

Captured on Rabbit Island between July 11th and September 3rd, 2012 the following field recordings document the birdsong, rustling of leaves, and palpable weather of the island environment, reinforced in its remoteness by the always audible Lake Superior—the rumble, waves and wind of which reach even the densely forested areas of the island’s interior.

These recordings (both stereo and quadraphonic versions) were placed on a recycled paperboard USB stick that was included in a limited edition artifact kit and exhibition publication for Andrew Ranville's solo exhibition No Island is a Man, presented at the DeVos Art Museum.

Noam Enbar
2015

2015 resident Noam Enbar is a composer and performer from Tel Aviv, Israel. He lived and worked on Rabbit Island between July 21st and August 8th, 2015. While in residence he composed five works that premiered at the 2015 Rabbit Island Exhibition opening at the DeVos Art Museum in Marquette, Michigan, on September 25th. The following songs were performed in the spirit of the American Sacred Harp tradition by a group of local Marquette, Michigan community singers, led by Enbar. The first four tracks were recorded by the ensemble on September 24th. The final track, Ni aazhawa'am minis, was recorded at the premiere, with the entire audience also participating. More information, along with Enbar's story on these pieces can be found at: rabbitisland.org/post/129095407090/noamenbar
